Say Goodbye to Bad Breath… See Your Doctor

Have you tried everything to get rid of halitosis, or bad breath, but failed? If you have, maybe it’s time to see a doctor or a dentist.

There are some health conditions that can cause the breath to smell awful. Gastroesophageal reflux disease can cause gastric acid to spill into the esophagus, which can cause mouth odor. Periodontitis is inflammation of the gums that can lead to tooth decay and bone breakdown. As a result of some cancers and metabolic disorders, toxins are produced that cause unique breath odors. Fishy breath can result from diabetes, kidney failure or liver failure. Uncontrolled diabetes produces chemicals called ketones that can lead to fruity smell.

Halitosis results when nasal discharge from inflamed sinuses drips to the back of the throat (postnasal drip). Upper and lower respiratory infections or ulcers in the respiratory system can also cause bad breath.

Saliva cleanses the mouth by removing food debris. Problems with salivary glands and some medications may cause xerostomia, or dry mouth, that can contribute to bad breath because of decreased saliva production.

Abnormalities in the oral and nasal cavities such as cleft palate can be good environments for bacterial growth and thereby promote malodorous breath.
