What are salivary glands?

The salivary glands are structures found in the mouth that produce saliva. Saliva is important because it acts to lubricate the mouth and helps in the breakdown of food.

What happens when there are disorders of the salivary glands?

Any disorder of the salivary glands will affect the production of saliva. This will result in:

  • Dry mouth and lips
  • Tooth decay
  • Eating disorders

What are the causes of salivary glands disorders?

The major causes of salivary gland problems are:

  • Trauma
  • Infections
  • Neoplasms (tumors)

What are the causes of malfunctions of the salivary glands?

Apart from neoplasms, a wide variety of diseases affect the salivary glands. These include acute and chronic inflammatory disorders, granulomatous diseases, Sjögren's syndrome, sialolithiasis and other diseases.

What are the symptoms of salivary gland problems?

Patients may complain of any of the following symptoms:

  • Swelling
  • Pain especially during eating
  • Halitosis (bad breath)
  • Dry mouth

When should I see a doctor?

If any of the symptoms appear, it is best to see your doctor right away. Your doctor may be able to diagnose the problem from your medical history and physical exam only. He/She may also be able to perform a biopsy if needed of the salivary tissue, especially in cases where cancer or a neoplasm is suspected.
