Vestibular Rehabilitation

What is vestibular rehabilitation?

Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a program designed to compensate for inner ear deficits. It uses exercise as an important part of therapy, essentially retraining the brain to compensate for the inner ear deficits.

Who needs VRT?

VRT can help with different inner ear problems, including benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Ménière's disease, labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis.

What happens during VRT?

The therapist will use a treatment plan designed to retrain the brain to recognize and process signals from the inner ear and coordinate them with information from vision and proprioception. This involves desensitizing the balance system to movements that provoke symptoms and increasing home-based activities and exercise in order to strengthen muscles.
